Hi, my name’s Dave Stickland. It’s good to meet you.

I’m a regular guy (as the Americans like to say) but what sets me apart is that I am passionate about retailing, sad I know. In fact, it’s in my blood, just take a look at these photos of my family and their retail businesses over the past 150 years or so.

 

I have been in the trenches, forging a long and very rewarding path in the weired and wonderful world of retail for the past 30 years.
Now, don’t worry, I’m not about to bore you with my life story… let’s face it this is all about you, but I’m merely pointing out that I’ve been in this game a long time, and it’s certainly safe to say that I’ve learned a thing or two over the years.
I’ve also seen a lot of businesses and dreams crash and burn, and just like anyone else, I’ve had my own fair share of ups and downs in business too.

From trading my time for a measly £1.00 an hour back in the 80’s on the checkouts at my local Sainsbury’s to building a booming chain of sports stores that turned over 8 figures a year, I’ve also been on both sides of the retail fence.

 

I must have been indoctrinated because here is one of my favourite toys – to this day!

 

Nowadays, though, I prefer to run my own tightly-knit operation and delegate the physical design and fit out work to my great crew, whilst I focus on teaching all the tricks of the trade to aspiring retailers just like you, so that you can finally get an edge on the rest of the market and rise to the top of the income ladder.

To be honest, there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing someone achieve financial success (and all that comes with it) as a result of the help I can give them.

It hasn’t always been sunshine and roses for me though. I should also mention that I once lost £120,000 in the middle of a mid-life crisis. At the age of 42 I tried to take on the supermarkets and lost, but like it’s so often said you learn more from your mistakes than your successes, but I’m going to save that story for another day.

Get knowledge & resources to work for them rather than using their knowledge & resources to work for others.

 

What does this really mean to you on a day to day basis? It means that almost anything operational that someone else can do for you more time effectively (E.G. Accounts, stock management and property maintenance) should be delegated so you can spend your valued and unique knowledge of your business on marketing it – i.e. getting more customers! I know you are going to say ‘How can I afford my limited resources paying someone else to do this for me?’ Well we will help you with this too. Yes ultimately marketing, i.e. getting customers should be your one and only priority because customers are your lifeblood and getting them, keeping them and turning them into fans of your business will guarantee you success.

Because let’s face it, nearly all the tried and tested methods of advertising that could once be relied upon to drive a steady stream of new customers your way have been rendered ineffective.

Like it or lump it, there’s been a definitive shift in the way that people make buying decisions. And unless you want to get left behind, your business needs to adapt.

The REAL problem is that most retailers have failed to adapt to the way the market has changed.

 

Unfortunately, most businesses have no idea how to connect with their audiences in today’s busy and connected marketplace. They haven’t the foggiest where to even start.

So, instead, they often turn to outdated forms of increasing footfall such as sticking an ad in the local newspaper, merely hoping and praying that someone sees it so they can cover their costs and break-even.

Or the other thing I see all the time is people wasting their money advertising their businesses in places that simply DON’T make sense, like those shopping mall video screens or even better on one of those local traders’ wall calendars!
